Pleasantville

Pleasantville-about 30 miles north of New York City -is a tranquil, tolerant village with a host of cultural and recreational attractions to offer its seven thousand residents. One of Westchester County’s oldest hamlets, Pleasantville was first settled in 1695. Nestled between two major thoroughfares–Bedford Rd and Manville Rd-the village center has cozy shops and highly acclaimed restaurants like the Iron Horse Grill, in the beautiful stone train station. Most housing in Pleasantville consists of single family homes from smaller capes to the large Victorians which line Pleasantville’s main streets. A limited number of apartments are available, as well as luxury condominiums.

Transportation

Commuters can use Pleasantville’s Metro North’s Harlem Line train station and in approximately 42 minutes reach Grand Central Terminal. Visit www.mta.info for schedule and fare information. Station Parking: The Pleasantville Metro North train station at Station Plaza at the corner of Manville Road and Wheeler Avenue has limited parking with daily fee (metered) parking. Annual cost ranges from $500 to $260 for lots farther from the station. Call 769-1997 for information. A limited number of permits are made available annually to residents of Mount Pleasant who reside within the Chappaqua Central School District on a lottery basis for parking in Chappaqua.

Recreation

  • The Jacob Burns Film Center opened in 2001 on the site of the old Rome Theater in the village of Pleasantville. JBFC is a nonprofit cultural arts center dedicated to: presenting the best of independent, documentary, and world cinema in a beautiful new facility. Leading actors, directors, screenwriters are frequent speakers at events.
  • Walk, bike, rollerblade, or run the North County Trailway, a 22.1 mile paved path located primarily on right-of-way lands of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. The Trailway runs from Eastview in the Town of Mount Pleasant north to Baldwin Place in the Town of Somers.on the Putnam County border. Anther 14.1 miles, south from Eastview to the Bronx border is being developed in sections as the South County Trailway.
  • Play golf at the new public course at Hudson Hills in Ossining and Hollowbrook Golf Course in Cortlandt Manor and on the private course at Hudson National in Croton which allows village residents with a qualifying handicap to play. Other nearby private clubs include The Sleepy Hollow Country Club and The Trump National Golf Club.
  • Prospero Winery (914)-769-6870 located on Marble Avenue in the village has a large selection of vintages and a tasting room.
  • Nannahagan Park on Lake Street has playground equipment, basketball courts and a fishing pond.
  • Pleasantville has a town pool located on Lake Street with a main pool, and a wading pool for toddlers.
  • Public tennis courts are available at the Pleasantville Middle School and at Foxwood Condos on Rt. 117.
  • Graham Hills Mountain Bike Trail is just off of Route 117; across from the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. This 431 acre park is geared to experienced mountain bike riders and hikers who appreciate a rugged and diverse terrain.

Shopping/Dining

  • Iron Horse Grill, located on Wheeler Avenue in the historic stone train station, is one of the finest restaurants in the area. Its menu is inspired. Don’t forget reservations and your credit card. Its pricy, but worth it.
  • Jackson & Wheeler is a neighborhood restaurant with a recently updated, extensive menu.
  • Frodo’s is one of the newest restaurant in Pleasantville, located on Pleasantville Road near Marble Ave. As you might expect, it has a ‘touch of wizardry’ in its cuisine. It’s also a good choice for lunch.
  • Old standbys include Michael’s Tavern for great burgers, A Mangiare for family Italian and Pleasantville Pizza for…you guessed it–pizza,
  • Jean Jacques in Pleasantville-the largest of his three locations-has his signature amazing pastries, soups, wraps and coffees. At night there is music in a side room that was formerly a bar. It’s located on Marble Avenue.
  • Mediterraneo is a charming, upscale Italian restaurant off Pleasantville Road. A little more casual is Soleluna, located on Marble Ave.
  • Pleasantville Antiques is small store, but everything is carefully chosen for its quality.
  • The Keeping Room has fun country home furnishing.
  • Heller’s Shoes on Pleasantville Road has a large selection of all types of shoes. It’s nice to be able to go shoe shopping without leaving town!
  • The Westchester Mall is 15 minutes away in White Plains (Bloomingdales, Nordstrom’s, Nieman Marcus)
  • Home Depot is 20-25 minutes away in Yonkers
  • Swaddee House of Thai in Thornwood has some of the best authentic Thai food in the county.
